Our
Story

In 2012, two friends, Linda McBurney and Bette Ziegler, traveled to Jacksonville to visit her niece. Her niece was active with the Medford Food Project and we saw the benefit that the Green Bags were having on their community. So they decided to bring the idea back to the Monmouth Independence area.

In 2013, the Mon-Indy Food Project started with a core group of four people: Pat Jaffer, Director of the Ella Curran Food Bank; Sue Teal, Director of the Senior Center; Bette Ziegler and Linda McBurney

Our first food pick-up netted 715 pounds of food on June 8 2013.  By December 2013, we were picking up over 1200 pounds of food.  In June 2019, the pick-up netted more than 2600 pounds of food. Every two months we receive more than 2,400 pounds of food.  As our project grew, two more sponsors came along and purchased more bags and materials:  Thornton Chiropractic and Cross Fit Kiowa. They both have been invaluable.
